Judgment in the Far East

It's ought to have been titled as "Juggernaut of Filipino Fists".

As it turned out, the Judgment in the Far East Boxing showdown last night at the Araneta Coliseum and aired thru CS/9 was an execution by Filipino Boxers of their foreign counterparts.

Bernabe "Abe" Concepcion claimed the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) International Featherweight Belt after a Technical Knockout (TKO) win over Kenya's Sande Otieno.

Concepcion inflicted a nasty cut on Otieno's left eye in the opening round that bloodied his foe. Otiendo, surprisingly and courageously put up a fight despite being thoroughly beaten. Concepcion even admitted after the bout that he deliberately prolonged the bout for the fans even though he hurt Otiendo many times.

The win enable Concepcion to add another title to his collection, the same title held by Manny Pacquiao. He continued his 16 bout winning streak since 2006. I was a bit surprised though by his monicker, "Real Deal". I think it belongs to Evander Holyfield. Nevertheless, I hope he continues to follow in the footsteps of Pacquiao.

In other bouts, Sonny Boy "the bullet" Jaro knocked out Thai Ruslee Samoh in round 1 of their light flyweight tussle. Denver Cuello also won by TKO over another Thai Yanus Emaury.

The future of Philippine boxing looks brighter with the likes Roberto "Calibre" Gonzales strutting his boxing skills. Gonzales could be the next Manny Pacquiao as he now sports an 8 - 0 record with 6 wins coming by way of knock out.

In the early goings, Fred Tupas was able to put the highly touted Gonzales at bay with great defense. But in the fourth round, Gonzales connected a wicked right to Tupas' midsection that sent the latter to the canvass and was not able to stand up, becoming the latest victim of Gonzales' hands.

Bobby Concepcion also won - over Christian Majas via first round knockout.

Pacquiao pummels De La Hoya into submission after 8th rounds

The Dream Match between two boxing superstars turned out to be a mismatch. But the pundits proved to be wrong as to who will be outmatched.

In a spectacular display of speed and punching power, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao dominated the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya right from the opening bell of the first round up until the eight round. Before the start of the 9th round, De La Hoya accepted his fate and embraced Pacquiao as a sign of his surrender.

Throughout the fight, Pacquiao displayed superb speed and boxing combinations that turned the future Hall of Famers De La Hoya like an old sitting duck to his punches.

Obviously, age and bringing down his weight took its toll on Oscar as he was never able to do anything against the younger Pacquiao.

The win was a further testament that Pacquiao is really the number one pound for pound fighter at the moment.
